Gumboots

Miltoncross students celebrated World Food Day on 16th October 2012.  Head Boy, Stanley Jeffery, Head Girl, Summer Haly and their deputies, Joe Vaughan and Amber Field, led assemblies to each year group to highlight the international day.  World Food Day recognises the fact that over 7 million children go to bed hungry and that the average amount of money spent on a child’s food per day in the world is just 64p.

Our senior students and volunteers in year 8 then sold seeds at break times for a donation.  All donations have been collected for The Gumboots Foundation, our year 8 charity.  The project we have helped fund with The Gumboots Foundation helps those less fortunate children in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg who live in poverty.  The seeds sold raised £140 to help build on the children’s food garden in the township that they have built on wasteland.  The vegetables that the children grow can be eaten and they can be sold at the local markets to raise money to support their own families.

MX heroes rescue family from the sea

Connor Thorpe and Kyle Cloke were praised in the local press after they saved a mother and son from drowning. Connor and Kyle were walking along the seafront when they spotted that Mrs Moorhouse and her 7 year old son Jake had got into difficulties, after Jake had slipped on slippery rocks and couldn’t get out of the sea. At the time, Mrs Moorhouse didn’t get a chance to thank the boys and didn’t know who they were.  But following a request for information by The News, Connor and Kyle were identified and Mrs Moorhouse and Jake were able to thank them.

Well done Conner and Kyle, we are all so proud of you!

World Aids Day

Miltoncross students and their families supported World Aids Day 2011 by donating football kit to the Alexandra Township football club.  The players range from 7 to 18 years old and most are  HIV infected or have been orphaned by AIDS, they have very little in the way of football kit.   The club is a chance for the children to escape the pressures of everyday life.  Miss Cloke’s sister, who lives in Johannesburg delivered the kit to the team.  Some of them have never played in football boots before and they were so pleased with their new kit!  Students at Miltoncross have watched a video composed by Miss Cloke’s sister in assemblies to see the excitement of the kit delivery and interviews from the Manager and the Captain thanking our students for their thoughts and effort to helping them.  A huge thank you to all the students, staff and parents who donated items, a particular mention goes to the Jeffery family!
